Stories — A Letter From the Studio
Who helped you on your path?
Many of my friends are artists or writers or performers and had to forge their artistic path within families whose members all had conventional jobs and who couldn't understand and didn't support their creativity.
What are you making time for?
When I started writing about my family a few months ago, I thought I'd start with my great-grandparents, who were both artists and who inspired the project. But I quickly made some disturbing discoveries that led me several generations further back.
Who is lurking in my family tree?
Last month I figured out that I'm a 4th generation artist. I came across a photograph of my great-grandmother at her painting easel, and the legacy hit me. I decided to start a 12 month research and writing project about my family.
Who made me?
Growing up, when we would visit my Scottish grandmother’s house, I would climb up the three flights of stairs to the tiny guest room at the top of the house, and from there, clamber through the small door halfway up the wall into the attic.
What is belonging? What is home?
After living in the US for over 20 years, this month I finally became a citizen! I'm the 4th generation of women in my family who followed love across an ocean and built a life in a new country.
