Who is lurking in my family tree?

Last month I figured out that I'm a 4th generation artist. I came across a photograph of my great-grandmother at her painting easel, and the legacy hit me. I decided to start a 12 month research and writing project about my family.

I thought I would begin with my great-grandmother, but as soon as I started digging I found a much more complicated story. Read more...

End of Year Sale - Get 20% Off!

Estyn Hulbert 20% Off Sale

I'll be at Narrowsburg's Indie Market today through Sunday with a great group of area artists and makers. Local products include gorgeous ceramics, delicious honey, exquisite clothing, natural beauty products... and jewelry! See the vendors on Instagram.

Narrowsburg, in the New York Catskills just an hour from my home, may seem like the boonies but the town has been getting attention from the New York Times and Vogue Magazine.

I'll have 20% off my usual pricing all weekend. Can't make it to Narrowsburg? Alexis Kletjian will also be offering 20% off my designs this weekend. If you're anywhere near Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, you should visit her gorgeous new gallery.

And the sale is happening online, this weekend only — December 8-10.

Intimate stories of past and future

Sugar in the Blood book cover

Sugar in the Blood by Andrea Stuart is an autobiographical exploration of slavery in Barbados. I don't think I could find a more personally relevant book after what I just discovered.

Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich got some negative reviews, but I found the description of a world in the midst of chaotic transition meaningful and satisfying. Have you read it? Did you like it?

What have you been reading? Reply to this email with your suggestions. I'm always looking for a good book.
