Super normal bottle opener

This week's #toolsontuesday is an old bottle opener. I hardly ever use it to open a beer but for years I kept it on my keyring because its weight and smooth shape are such a pleasure to hold.

I was recently introduced to the idea of "Super Normal" (thanks, Melissa Easton!) As I understand it, Super Normal objects are intrinsically appealing and do not appear to be "designed". You can read more about Super Normal here.

This bottle opener feels like a Super Normal object. There are probably thousands just like it, sitting invisibly in kitchen junk drawers, yet the feeling when you pick one of them up is of an essential rightness. No fanfare. No fuss. Just the good feeling of exactly the right tool for the job.

I have strong feelings about many of the tools I use. As a maker, these tools are almost as meaningful to me as the things I make. I created #toolsontuesday to keep up the practice of sharing stories about the tools we use and live with.

Every Tuesday, I share one of my favorite tools. I hope you'll share yours in the comments — it feels good to honor these everyday objects.
