Patterns on the street

I used to live in Brooklyn. When I moved upstate to a house in the country I didn't think I'd ever again spend more than fleeting visits in New York. But things change, and I've been spending stretches of time in the city again.

Walking the streets I've been noticing all the patterns that are baked into the surface of buildings and sidewalk.

Some ornate and purposeful...

Some made up of the random markings of time and chance...

Or combinations of practical surfaces...

Or sometimes it's just the combination of light and shadow that draws the pattern for a while...
