Key

I got a couple of extra keys cut at the hardware store this morning. Keys are so commonplace that it’s easy to forget how important they are until one goes missing. These tiny pieces of metal are the essential tool for getting into our homes.

Antique door key from Edinburgh, Scotland

My dad gave me this strange key. It belonged to the front door of my very first home in Edinburgh, Scotland. The apartment was built in the 1790s. I wonder if the key dates back that far. It looks like it could.

I have strong feelings about many of the tools I use. As a maker, these tools are almost as meaningful to me as the things I make. I created #toolsontuesday to keep up the practice of sharing stories about the tools we use and live with.

On Tuesday, I share my favorite tools. I hope you'll share yours in the comments — it feels good to honor these everyday objects.
